At its best

Winter. Citrus Australia says grapefruit can be found all year, and Sydney Markets lists it for June, July and August. In June, Brisbane Markets was pointing shoppers to good-value grapefruit from south-east Queensland.

At the shop

Pick fruit that feels heavy for its size, with smooth, firm skin, which is the best sign of a juicy one. Red grapefruit has red flesh and is sweet and seedless.

Keeping it

Whole grapefruit is a hardy fruit. Once cut, cover the halves and keep them in the fridge.

Three dinners

  • Grapefruit, avocado and prawn salad With rocket and a lime dressing.
  • Grilled fish with grapefruit salsa Segments, red onion and coriander.
  • Roast chicken with grapefruit halves Roasted in the tin, cut side up.

How we decide. Each item carries a score from 0 to 20 for every month of the year. We call 16 or more “at its peak” and 8 to 15 “around”. The scores were checked against Australian growers’ bodies, state government pages and the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and last reviewed on 9 October 2026.
