Kiwifruit in season in Australia
Kiwifruit is in season in Australia from April to September, and at its peak from May to July. This is the cooler south; the tropical north has its own calendar.
At its best
Autumn into winter. Victorian growers start picking in March, and in 2024 harvest ran on into June. Sydney Markets lists kiwifruit from March through to August. In late May, Brisbane Markets reported both green and gold fruit from Victoria in great supply.
At the shop
Buy firm fruit and ripen it at home. Green-fleshed kiwifruit is less sweet than the yellow-fleshed variety, which is best eaten while still slightly firm.
Keeping it
Leave firm fruit on the bench to ripen. It is ready when it yields to gentle pressure near the stem. Move ripe fruit to the fridge. Keep apples away from kiwifruit, because they make it ripen too quickly.

How we decide. Each item carries a score from 0 to 20 for every month of the year. We call 16 or more “at its peak” and 8 to 15 “around”. The scores were checked against Australian growers’ bodies, state government pages and the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and last reviewed on 9 October 2026. Seasons shift a few weeks with the weather and the state, so treat the edges as guides. Spotted something wrong? Tell us at [email protected].
