At its best

A green that suits the cooler months. Healthy Food Guide lists it in season in mid-winter, and autumn through spring is its best stretch.

At the shop

Bright green, crisp stalks, with small tight green florets. Avoid limp stems and yellow buds.

Keeping it

In a breathable bag in the fridge, for up to 10 days. Rinse before using. Do not overcook it, or it goes bland and mushy. A quick blanch followed by iced water keeps the colour and crispness.

Three dinners

  • Broccolini and chilli pasta Char it in a hot pan with garlic.
  • Sesame broccolini with rice and egg Steam for two minutes, then dress with soy and sesame oil.
  • Roast chicken thighs with broccolini Add the greens to the tray for the last ten minutes.

How we decide. Each item carries a score from 0 to 20 for every month of the year. We call 16 or more “at its peak” and 8 to 15 “around”. The scores were checked against Australian growers’ bodies, state government pages and the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and last reviewed on 9 October 2026. Seasons shift a few weeks with the weather and the state, so treat the edges as guides. Spotted something wrong? Tell us at [email protected].
