Sweet potato in season in Australia
Sweet potato is in season in Australia from December to September, and at its peak from March to June. This is the cooler south; the tropical north has its own calendar.
At its best
Autumn is when sweet potato is a favourite, as people look for starchy, warming food, and it is at its peak from March to June.
At the shop
Choose firm ones and leave behind any with soft patches or mould.
Keeping it
Store in a cool, dark place away from onions. Keep it out of the fridge, since sweet potato does better outside it.
Three dinners
- Baked sweet potato with black beans Split open and top with beans, sour cream and coriander.
- Sweet potato and chickpea curry Cubes simmered in coconut milk and spices.
- Sweet potato wedges with a fried egg Hot oven, smoked paprika.
How we decide. Each item carries a score from 0 to 20 for every month of the year. We call 16 or more “at its peak” and 8 to 15 “around”. The scores were checked against Australian growers’ bodies, state government pages and the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and last reviewed on 9 October 2026. Seasons shift a few weeks with the weather and the state, so treat the edges as guides. Spotted something wrong? Tell us at [email protected].
