Spinach in season in Australia
Spinach is in season in Australia from March to November, and at its peak from April to May and September to October. This is the cooler south; the tropical north has its own calendar.
At its best
Autumn and winter are peak season for the spinach family, and the good months run into spring.
At the shop
Pick leaves that look fresh and green, with no yellowing or slime. Baby leaves are tender enough for salads, and larger leaves suit cooking.
Keeping it
Keep it dry, in its original packaging, in the fridge. Wash it just before you use it.
Three dinners
- Spinach and fetta pie Squeeze the cooked spinach dry before filling the filo.
- Saag paneer Blend the cooked spinach to a thick sauce.
- Spinach and egg baked in the oven Wilt the leaves, make wells and bake the eggs in them.
How we decide. Each item carries a score from 0 to 20 for every month of the year. We call 16 or more “at its peak” and 8 to 15 “around”. The scores were checked against Australian growers’ bodies, state government pages and the Sydney and Melbourne markets, and last reviewed on 9 October 2026. Seasons shift a few weeks with the weather and the state, so treat the edges as guides. Spotted something wrong? Tell us at [email protected].
